Project Summary
Located in Phayao province, northern Thailand, the University of Phayao originates from Naresuan University’s IT campus. While the existing building layout remained unchanged, the landscape and open spaces were redesigned. The main circulation systems were rerouted, allowing an articulation or logical connection of open spaces and creating a hierarchy of buildings. The campus landscape thus became more legible. The axis – a classic landscape element – connects all the existing buildings and the hilly landscape background creates a memorable open space and identity for the university. An amphitheater and meandering pathways accentuate the landscape’s contours and make use of an existing reservoir. The use of local materials and attention to local culture emphasizes the importance of local wisdom and the region’s cultural values. A ‘Botanical Campus’ theme was adopted for the plants, flowers, color schemes and plantation patterns of softscape design. This has creating learning opportunities as well as providing Phayao with a new tourist attraction.
